ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for Cannabis Testing Laboratories (MS 113)

Throughout this course participants from the cannabis industry, from growers to regulators to testing laboratories, will learn how and why the new ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard applies to them and how accreditation improves the visibility, creditability, and safety of the cannabis industry. This course will be presented for the benefit of all industry stakeholders, however there is direct reference as to how the Standard applies to accredited cannabis-testing facilities.

  • Registration vs. Accreditation vs. Certification.
  • The international community.
  • How and why the standard applies to cannabis.
  • A2LA Accreditation Process.
  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 - What the Standard Requires:
    • Documents and Records – what are they and how to discern them in the standard
    • Requirements for a quality manual;
    • Document control;
    • Contracts/Agreements with customers;
    • Purchasing quality-critical services and supplies;
    • Handling complaints and non-conforming work;
    • Corrective and preventive actions;
    • Records maintenance;
    • Internal auditing and management review processes;
    • Personnel training and authorization;
    • Test and calibration procedures;
    • Equipment calibration and maintenance;
    • Traceability to the SI;
    • Sample preparation;
    • Quality control; and
    • Test and calibration reports.
  • A2LA Specific Requirements:
    • Advertising accreditation;
    • Reporting accredited results;
    • Traceability requirements for measurement equipment; and
    • Participation in proficiency testing.


There is no pre-requisite for this course.

Testing laboratory management and quality personnel and Regulators.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to: 

1. Describe the process-based approach of the Standard;
2. Explain new concepts in 17025:2017 such as:
a. Continual Improvement (using PDCA and KPIs);
b. Verification and Validation;
c. Decision Rules;
d. Principles of Impartiality; and
e. Risk Based Thinking
3. Analyze scenarios to identify non-conformities, risks, and opportunities related to the new requirements in the standard;
4. Analyze sample calibration records to demonstrate metrological traceability; and
5. List the areas where Documents and Records are required under the new Standard.

Presentation Style

The course materials will be presented in an interactive lecture style (50%), as well by using application exercises and role playing (50%).
