Basic Statistics for Laboratory Professionals

This is an introductory course designed to provide participants with a foundation to the fundamental concepts of statistics. Statistical concepts and methods are presented in a way that emphasizes understanding the principles of data collection and analysis.

 

Prerequisites

Participants should be familiar with spreadsheet basic mathematical functions.

 

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

The participant will need to bring a laptop computer (PC or MAC) with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet installed. Please note that the tablet and smart phone versions of Excel and other spreadsheets do not have the full functionality of the PC versions and the participant may not be able to utilize all the power of the spreadsheet covered during the training.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

1.    Identify, explain, and recognize key terms, definitions, and reference sources related to statistics;
2.    Use Excel to perform basic statistical calculations; and
3.    Summarize the relationship between statistics and measurement uncertainty.
